Electrical Engineering Depths

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DEPTHS (Effective prior to FA13)
Students must complete a “depth requirement” of at least five quarter courses to provide a focus for their studies. This set must include a clear chain of study of at least three courses which depend on the “breadth” courses. Students may choose one of the approved depth sequences listed below, or propose another with the approval of their faculty adviser. Some of the approved sequences have lower-division prerequisites and thus list six courses. Students choosing one of these sequences will have to complete only two “professional” electives. Guidelines for meeting the depth requirement can be obtained from the undergraduate office. ECE 111, 118, 191 cannot be used to satisfy both the design and depth requirements.

Electronic Devices and Materials

This program provides students with a strong background in the
fundamentals of device physics, characteristics, design and fabrication of
modern electronic devices and integrated circuits. The program is designed
to equip the students with the necessary principles to innovate and tackle
challenges in advanced electronic and optoelectronic devices, based on
conventional and on new emerging materials.
Students will be well prepared for career opportunities in electronics and
a variety of related industries, such as solid-state lighting and
detection, energy harvesting, sensors (eg. biological, chemical,
radiation), and others. Students in this program will also develop a
strong foundation for graduate study and research.

For depth sequences that list four courses, students must complete an additional upper-division ECE course for the remaining fifth depth course requirement. Courses that are used to satisfy other major requirements such as ECE 100-109 are excluded. Guidelines for meeting the depth requirement can be obtained from the undergraduate office. ECE 111, and 118 cannot be used to satisfy both the design and depth requirements.
