Communications at UCSD

The communications group at UCSD has grown rapidly in recent years and is now among the largest in the country. Twenty faculty members conduct research in communications, networks, and signal processing, with emphasis ranging from abstract theory and performance analysis to system design and implementation. The group is seeking exceptional Ph.D. students interested in communications research.

Information for prospective students

Most Ph.D. students are fully supported throughout their studies with Research Assistantships providing a monthly stipend and tuition waiver. In addition, several fellowships are awarded annually, affording their awardees broad freedom to select their advisor and research area.

If you would like to apply, please follow the instructions on the department's website.

Communications in the San Diego area

Called ``Wireless Valley'' by the New York Times, the Sorrento Valley north of UCSD is home to several hundred communications companies. Faculty members cooperate with a number of these and other companies through the school's Center for Wireless Communications, Center for Magnetic Recording Research, and The California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology.

About UCSD

UCSD's student body is comprised of fifteen thousand undergraduates and three thousand graduates. Its faculty includes five Nobel Laureates, fifty four members of the National Academy of Sciences and eleven members of the National Academy of Engineering. UCSD ranks third among all universities in volume of federal research funds per faculty member, and ranks first in science productivity among all public institutions. Location and recreation

The UCSD campus is located in a 1,200-acre eucalyptus grove on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. La Jolla and San Diego are minutes away with numerous restaurants, art galleries and theaters. The region's temperate weather allows for year-round outdoor activities such as swimming, surfing, cycling and hiking. Winter skiing and the wilderness of Baja California are within a few hours' drive.
