Semeon Y. Litvin was selected as a 2006 SPIE scholarship winner.
Litvin is an undergraduate student in the Optics program at the University
of California, San Diego. His area of interest is in optics and superconductors.
SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering awards scholarships
and grants annually to SPIE student members and to educational institutions.
The mission of the SPIE Scholarships and Grants Program, established in 1978,
is to recognize, assist and encourage, SPIE student members and academic
organizations throughout the world with outstanding potential for long-range
contribution to the field of optics and photonics.
In 2006, SPIE will award 108 scholarships to individual students and 21
grants to educational institutions. Seven scholarships will be given to
graduating high school students, 29 to undergraduate students, and 72 to
graduate students.
The Scholarship Committee, chaired by Sandra Biedron of Argonne National
Laboratory, selected Semeon Y. Litvin for his potential long-range
contribution to the field of optics and photonics. "To date, SPIE has
distributed nearly $3 million dollars in individual scholarships and
institutional grants. This ambitious effort reflects the Society's
commitment to education and to the next generation of optical scientists
and engineers around the world," said Paul McManamon, SPIE President.
