The UC Education Abroad Program is the distinctive and distinguished international program of the University of California that provides academic exchanges and integrates international curricula and learning opportunities into the University. Through institutional partnerships and initiatives, EAP expands the context and content of learning by exposing students and faculty to the challenges of diverse languages and intellectual traditions, other approaches to knowledge, and different cultural assumptions. EAP develops internationally aware citizens and enhances the potential of students and faculty to understand, respond to, and contribute to a rapidly changing world.

Opportunities for Engineering Students:
EAP provides UC engineering majors with unparalleled opportunities to obtain the broader perspectives, knowledge, and skills necessary to be an effective professional in a rapidly changing global economy. Most major engineering projects are global in nature, and many engineering firms are multinational in composition. There is a growing need for not only well-trained engineers, but engineers who have the cross-cultural skills and international experience to interact with colleagues and competitors from around the world.

EAP offers a variety of short-term and year-long programs taught in English or in a foreign language that complement and enrich UC engineering degrees, in most cases without delaying graduation or adding financial burden. Students can fulfill major and GE requirements, get a comparative perspective on their field of study, and gain valuable international experience in the classroom and laboratory. Furthermore, many EAP programs offer internship and research opportunities.

Programs are available for students at the sophomore, junior, and senior levels. While courses in engineering, basic science, and mathematics can be found at most EAP host universities, this page highlights particularly strong or unique programs for engineering majors.

Many classes abroad are comparable to advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate-level courses at UC. Applicants should pay special attention to the design of the degree program abroad and be sure to meet the appropriate prerequisites prior to enrolling in a class.

EAP students must take a full-time course of study while abroad. Although a one-to-one match between courses offered at the UC home campus and the EAP host institution is not always possible due to differences in the academic term, efforts are made at UC campus and university-wide levels to help ensure that the overseas programs do not delay an engineering student’s progress toward graduation. Students should plan for EAP in close consultation with a faculty adviser.
