UC San Diego Engineering Professors Elected Fellows of National Academy of Inventors
Eric Fullerton, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Prashant Mali, a professor in the Shu Chien-Gene Lay Department of Bioengineering, have been named 2023 Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors. Full Story

Pamela Cosman Bridges Disciplines to Build a More Efficient, Equitable Future
Electrical engineering professor Pamela Cosman is the recipient of multiple research and diversity awards, a published author, a tenured faculty member with the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering, a mother of four and director of the NeuroDiversity in Tech internship program at the university’s Qualcomm Institute (QI). She has won multiple awards for her research in image and video compression, and for promoting mentorship and gender equity in her field. Full Story

Electrical Engineer Receives Eckman Award for Research in Control Theory
Jorge Poveda, an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UC San Diego, has been named the recipient of the 2023 Donald P. Eckman Award in honor of his contributions to the field of automatic control. To mark this achievement, Poveda and his lab members explain in this video what control theory is and how it applies to our daily lives. Full Story

UC San Diego Researchers Awarded $1 Million to Build First-of-its-Kind Microscope
The National Science Foundation has awarded $1 million to an interdisciplinary UC San Diego research team to build a first-of-its-kind, super-resolution microscope that will set the stage for advances in the biomedical sciences. Using materials custom-built at the university, the machine has the potential to achieve 10 times the resolution and more than 100 times the measurement speed of similar microscopes at current state-of-the-art levels. UC San Diego Joins USC-led Coalition to Boost Microelectronics Production for 5G/6G
The U.S. Department of Defense has announced that it has awarded approximately $27 million for a USC-led Microelectronics Commons project. The University of California San Diego is a key member of this coalition of research and industry organizations with the power to accelerate the development and manufacturing of microelectronics in the United States. October 26, 2023Novel Device from UC San Diego Researchers Promotes Efficient, Real-Time and Secure Wireless Access
A new device from UC San Diego offers a fresh tool for the challenge of increasing public access to the wireless network. The deveice was created in the lab of Dinesh Bharadia, a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Jacobs School of Engineering. The engineers developed prototype technology to filter out interference from other radio signals while sweeping underutilized spectrum frequency bands for high-traffic periods. The technology could help regulators distribute wireless access at an affordable cost during low-traffic periods. Full Story
