Student Success and Fellowships

Electrical and Computer Engineering Excellence and Innovation
To support student success programs including tutoring and research opportunities. The funds may also be spent for general department support at the discretion of the department chair.
Electrical and Computer Engineering Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP) Fund
SRIP fund pays undergraduate and MS students to do full-time research in a faculty lab over the summer. Each year the department supports about 30-50 students through SRIP, which involves part-time research for academic credit in Spring quarte, followed by full-time paid summer research. Engaging our undergraduates in research is incredibly important for fostering a research interest and enabling students to decide to pursue a PhD.
Charles Tu CORE Endowed Fund
The Charles Tu CORE fund supports electrical and computer engineering outreach efforts by providing funding to student organizations. These outreach programs benefit both K-12 and undergraduate engineering students who participate by learning from and growing with one another. Outreach is meant to inspire the next generation of engineers through positive and fulfilling engagement at an early age by providing opportunities to learn about a future in the field of engineering.
Currently, the Charles Tu CORE fund provides annual funding for the following student organizations: IEEE, HKN, ECE Undergraduate Student Council, SPIE, ACM, and Project in a Box. The Charles Tu CORE fund also provides funding to support the COSMOS program at UC San Diego.
Electrical and Computer Engineering Fellowship Fund
This fund support outstanding ECE Graduate students, providing fellowships that enable them to pursue advance research, drive innovation, and become the next generation of leaders in technology.
Undergraduate Student Organizations

Student Org (IEEE)
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE) is a global, non-profit professional association with more than 377,000 members across 150 countries. Our IEEE student chapter provides unique opportunities for students to grow through technical workshops (e.g., soldering, Arduino), professional development activities, and competition teams (e.g. TritonBots, Supercomputing Team), K-12 outreach, and social activities. With a wide range of activities, our award-winning IEEE chapter offers something for every student’s interests and goals.
Student Org (IEEE-HKN)
Eta Kappa Nu (IEEE-HKN), the honor society of IEEE, recognizes excellence in electrical and computer engineering by bringing together high-achieving students, alumni, and professionals distinguished by their academic success, leadership, and character. At UC San Diego, IEEE-HKN advances student success through free tutoring, workshops, and events that strengthen technical, professional, and academic development, helping prepare the next generation of engineering leaders.
Student Org (SPIE)
The SPIE student chapter at UC San Diego (UCSD), affiliated with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), connects students interested in optics and photonics with professional networking, research, and outreach opportunities. It acts as a bridge to the international society for optics and photonics (SPIE), supporting student development within UCSD's top-tier photonics research programs.
Student Org (PiB)
Project in a Box (PiB) expands access to hands-on engineering education through innovative project kits and workshops for K-12 and university students. By fostering a community of makers, PiB equips students with practical skills, inspires innovation, and supports the next generation of engineers at the Jacobs School of Engineering and across San Diego
